Private schools ‘dictate terms’ to parents, courtesy Education Department

Early Times Report

Jammu, May 20: The recent government nod to private schools to seek tuition fee from the students has empowered these institutions to dictate terms to the parents.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “The School Education department has apparently forgotten the parents, who are working in private sector, including organized and unorganized. They are struggling to make their ends meet due to the lockdown.”
The private schools had put forward their case before the School Education Department and one of the main issues was that they have to pay the salary of the staff members. They had said that if they don’t charge fee they will not be able to pay the salaries after which the School Education Department allowed them to go ahead.
“Majority of the private school owners are utilizing the services of only few teachers for the online classes and others have been asked to take rest. It simply means these teachers will not be given their salaries,” said a teacher.
The teachers said that the government has not created any platform for them to go and register their complaints against the private school owners.
“The organized sector has already slashed the monthly salaries of its employees, while the shops have remained closed for almost 2 months now. Drivers, mechanics, plumbers, electricians, vendors, people working in hotels, shops, restaurants and others have not earned a single penny during the lockdown period. Their wards are studying in private schools. How can they afford to pay the fee,” parents said.
They said that only the government employees didn’t face any problem during the lockdown period as they got their salaries and they can easily pay the fee.
“The School Education department is more concerned about the interests of the private school owners rather than the general public. It’s unfortunate and biased approach,” they added.
