EARLY TIMES REPORT

ANANTNAG, May 20: In another instance, the district administration in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, on Wednesday mishandled a deceased Covid-19 patient by allowing the burial of the deceased lady in violation of the laid down COVID protocol. As per reports, a large number of people not only attended the funeral of deceased lady but also buried her as per religious rites after no officer from the district administration visited the area for ensuring the implementation of protocol.
“Early in the morning we approached district administration and requested them to bring the dead body as early as possible so that she can be buried as per the COVID protocol but the officials didn’t pay any heed to our repeated pleas,” a family member told Early Times over phone.
He said that they had agreed and assured to cooperate with the administration but the officers at the helm of affairs didn’t show any interest. “The absence of officers singled that the deceased lady was wrongfully declared COVID positive and because of which people gathered and decided to conduct her last rites as per the religious protocol,” they said, adding the officers would have come to the village if she had genuinely tested positive.
40 year old female patient (name withheld), who was suffering from cancer, died at SKIMS Soura on late Tuesday night fallowing which hospital authorities claimed that she had tested positive for Covid-19.
Meanwhile, few locals claimed that Naib Tehsildar visited the village but he didn’t bother to come down from his official vehicle. “He was half a kilometer away from the spot and didn’t come down from the vehicle,” they said. Locals said that around 200 people including the family members, who had came in touch with the deceased patient, had tested negative.
Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, Bashir Ahmad Dar expressed shock over the development and ordered probe into the matter.
“Early in the morning I had directed Sub-Divisional Magistrate Bijbehara to visit the area and ensure the burial of the lady as per the protocol but now I don’t know why he didn’t ask people to fallow the protocol. I have ordered a probe and anyone even officers of found guilty will be punished,” DC Anantnag said.
