JK Admin likely to take final call on rechristening SKUAST-J to JAU
Matter picks up pace after LG’s intervention
6/8/2020 12:12:56 AM
Early Times Report

Jammu, June 7: The Jammu and Kashmir administration has reportedly expedited the process to rechristen Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) Jammu to Jammu Agriculture University (JAU).
Sources told Early Times that given the continuous efforts and longtime aspirations of the university teaching faculties and well-known personalities of Jammu region to change the nomenclature of SKUAST Jammu to Jammu Agriculture University; the JK UT Admin has reportedly initiated a process to give pace to the matter.
They further said that the Chancellor of University (i.e. LG) had sent a letter vide No. LGS-1 (GR)/20/4073 dated 12.05.2020 to Vice-Chancellor SKUAST-J on the subject ‘Rechristening of SKUAST-J as Jammu Agricultural University’ and had sought his views on the matter.
“The issue was deliberated in the University Governance meeting which was held under the chairmanship of Vice Chancellor SKUAST-J on 29.05.2020 and accordingly vide letter No. AUJ/Secy/20-21/09-10 dated 03.06.2020 addressed to Principal Secretary at Lieutenant Governor’s Secretariat J&K, Registrar SKUAST-J and conveyed that University has no objection in rechristening SKUAST-J as Jammu Agricultural University, through appropriate policy decision by the Government,” they informed.
Pertinently, the demand for the rechristening of SKUAST-J as Jammu Agricultural University was raised in the year 2016 by the teaching association of the varsity. During this period several memorandums were submitted at different quarters, including then National BJP President and incumbent Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, MoS in Prime Minister’s office Dr Jitender Singh, then Deputy Chief Minister J&K Dr. Nirmal Singh, then Minister for Agriculture J&K and Chief Secretary BB Vyas.
Moreover, in February 2020, the teaching association discussed the issue with Lieutenant Governor GC Murmu at Rajbhawan Jammu and submitted a detailed draft and LG assured that their sole demand will be considered soon.
Some senior faculty member of SKUAST- Jammu had informed the LG that demand is very genuine as most of the State Agricultural Universities (SAUs) in India are established in the name of the State like Assam Agricultural University (AAU), Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Kerala Agricultural University (KAU), Rajasthan Agricultural University (RAU), Tamil Naidu Agricultural University (TNAU), Orissa University of Agriculture & Technology (OUAT) so on the same pattern Agricultural University of Jammu should be named as Jammu Agricultural University (JAU).
They further informed that the farming community, civil society and intellectual from Jammu region were of the opinion that their identity is suppressed by prefixing the name Sher-e-Kashmir before Agricultural University of Jammu and they have high aspirations that they shall be identified by the name that itself represents all the cultures and values prevailing in their Jammu region. So, rechristening of SKUAST-J as Jammu Agricultural University will be a good confidence building measure for the people of Jammu, who have struggled a lot for this Agricultural University.
