No check on quality, shelf life of drugs as ACD Poonch remains untraceable

EARLY TIMES REPORT

POONCH, June 13: Assistant Controller Drugs (ACD) Poonch, a post created perhaps only for the sake of formality as the incumbent of the chair or for that matter his subordinates are hardly visible on ground due to which the quality, price or expiry of the drugs being traded to the consumers remain by and large unchecked. Sources informed Early Times that the chemist shops in Poonch and its adjoining areas are operating without any proper check by the Assistant Controller Drugs, Poonch and his team thereby ignoring the vital aspects of ensuring uninterrupted and hassle free supply of lifesaving/essential medicines besides keeping an eye on their quality as well as the shelf life and prices. “Since the officials of the Drugs and Food Control Organization (DFCO), J&K are not performing their duty of making routine inspections in the town and its vicinity, the chemists are having a free hand. There is no check of stocks, quality of medicines, expiry or prices. The chemist stores are running the show without any fear of law,” said sources. “Office of the Assistant Controller Drugs, Poonch has had a significant role to play in the present situation of COVID-19 lockdown. It must be checking and controlling any deficiency or malpractice being adopted by the chemists on a regular basis, but it is nowhere to be seen,” they added. Meanwhile, few locals complained that they have never seen any Drug Inspector or other official of the department making surprise inspection of the chemist stores in order to detect any irregularity. The locals appealed to the District administration and Drug Controller, J&K to direct the concerned officials to make a thorough inspection of all the drug stores in Poonch before something unfortunate happens due to no check particularly with respect to the quality and shelf life of the medicines being sold to the customers. When contacted Assistant Controller Drugs, Poonch said that he has recently joined the posting and not much aware of what happened during his predecessor’s time but if there is any lapse it will be corrected.
“I assure you that regular inspection of all the chemist shops in the town will be taken up soon and if any negligence is found it will be dealt strictly,” he said.
