Kashmir Babus under scanner for prolonged ‘quarantine’ of migrant workers
6/15/2020 12:31:02 AM

Early Times Report

Srinagar, June 14: Two of the officers from Kashmir have come under scanner for the allegedly prolonged quarantine of migrant workers to “mint personal fortunes.”
Sources said the government of Jammu and Kashmir has got credible inputs that the districts of Anantnag and Budgam had kept non-locals in quarantine for around 40 days.
Sources said two officers, who were previously holding key positions in the said districts had allegedly unlawfully kept the non-local laborers in the “prolonged quarantine” though such a facility was supposed to be only for a maximum period of 14 days.
Sources said the officials were showing expenditure of lakhs on running such quarantine facilities even as scores of non-locals were kept allegedly “stationed” at such facilities.
Sources said despite repeated requests from such migrants, the local officials had not been buying their pleas to send them back home.
Sources said in some such cases the non-locals had even opted for hunger strike at the quarantine facilities but to no avail.
Sources said finally the top brass in the government got to know about the plight of the non-locals.
Sources said while efforts were subsequently made to send the laborers to their native places, the question was raised as to why people from outside were kept in such “confinement.”
“You cannot take people hostage to mint personal fortunes and to show huge expenditure when the government quarantine cannot be for beyond 14 days. How can any official defend such violation of prescribed protocol,” said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
Sources said the administration had to face severe embarrassment for having kept the migrant labourers allegedly hostage.
A senior official said both the officers in question have been taken off the charge they had been previously holding.
“No indiscipline is being tolerated and non-performing ones will not be spared,” the official sources said.
