Abolition of SHGs another anti-people decision of BJP Govt: Manohar
8/16/2020 11:44:44 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Aug 16: Reacting to the recent order of government to abolish the quota of Self Help Groups (SHGs) in construction and upgradation of infrastructure work in various government departments and corporations, former Minister and President DCC, Kathua Dr Manohar Lal Sharma said that this is another anti-people decision of the BJP government in center who are indirectly ruling Jammu & Kashmir and are not wasting a single minute to pursue their anti-Jammu Kashmir agenda. The government has also abolished engineering wing in various government departments & merged it with PWD which will further increase unemployment for young engineers passing out every year from various institutes.
The concept of Self Help Groups was introduced in 2004 by the then Congress-PDP government to make the educated youth of Jammu & Kashmir self-reliant and job creators instead of a job seekers. This unique concept reserved 30% of the total jobs in construction and upgradation of infrastructure work in various government departments and corporations for the Self Help Groups which could be made by a group of 4-10 engineering educated persons. There are 1000 SHG registered in Jammu & 1400 SHG registered in Kashmir which have approximately 15000 engineers working and taking advantage of this scheme. These Self Help Groups are not only earning and feeding their own families but were also generating employment for thousands of masons, carpenters, plumbers, tipper-trolley owners, peoples working in the offices of these Self Help Groups as managers, accountants and many other such jobs. This anti-people decision of the government will destroy livelihood of thousands of people and effect lakhs of people in their families. From last 16 years these educated people were earning for themselves and generating employment for thousands of people but the government with its one mindless decision has destroyed their employment source without giving them any alternative to earn their livelihood. Manohar Lal Sharma has assured the Self Help Groups and all people associated with them that Congress party will stand and support them in their struggle and will lead this struggle from front. He said that the government should immediately withdraw this decision and restore the 30% quota of Self Help Groups in all jobs in construction works in all government departments.
