BARAMULLA, Aug 18: The two day long nearly 27 hours gunfight has finished today with forces killing the third militant, who had engaged them in an intense gunfight, taking the total death toll to eight including two CRPF personnel, two army men, one JK Police SPO and three militants in Kreeri area of this north Kashmir district.
After an overnight lull, the firing was resumed today early this morning in the Kreeri area where the militants were hiding since yesterday, after the encounter had raged. However the operation was suspended late last night due to darkness and thickness of orchards, said sources.
They said that, today morning, there was a heavy exchange of fire from both sides that gave some difficulties to the security forces, but they extended the cordon and launched a manhunt against the militants, where they were hiding.
Security forces blasted a hideout while using Improvised Explosive Device (IED), where militants were hiding since yesterday.
Reports said that, the dead body of a third militant has been recovered from an encounter site in Kreeri area and so far 3 militants, 2 army men have been killed, while 2 CRPF and 1 SPO were also killed earlier yesterday in militant attack in the area.
Yesterday, driver Khurshid Khan and Constable Sharma Lavkish Sudarshan of CRPF and SPO Muzaffar Ahmad were killed in an encounter after the nakka party was attacked by militants in Kreeri area.
Today 2 Army men were also injured who were later removed to army hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries, and they have been identified as Pankaj and Ravesh Kumar taking the total death toll of SFs to five.
While as since Monday morning three militants were also neutralized who were identified as Sajad Ahmad Mir @Haider, of Brath Kalan Sopore (LeT Chief of North Kashmir) and Anayatullah Mir of Andergam Pattan, and a most wanted LeT top commander Usman (Non Local) in Kreeri area that were affiliated with proscribed terror outfit LeT.
Huge cache of arms and ammunition has been recovered from the encounter site including two AK-47 rifles and 3 Pistols, rounds, and other incriminatory materials.
It is also learnt that, this is the first time since 2004 that a gunfight had broken out in Kreeri area, the encounter had raged between forces and militants on Monday morning after militants attacked a Naka party at Doolipora- Kreeri junction in the outskirts of the town.
However sources also said that from past few days, there were inputs about the presence of militants in some areas, after which the security forces had launched massive CASO against the militants and the join team of security forces also conducted searches in various areas like in Goshbugh Pattan, Sopore and again in Pattan area.
