Road macdamisation across J&K
8/21/2020 1:02:06 AM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 20: The Jammu and Kashmir administration allocating Rs 200 crore for macdamisation of the roads across the Union Territory has evoked concern from the stakeholders as they believe that amount is “too less” to cover the entire J&K. Sources told Early Times that the funds released for the macadamisition programme are too little as with this amount approximately 700 kilometers of road can be blacktopped despite the fact that thousands of kilometers of roads are awaiting blacktopping.
“It has been observed that approximately Rs 30 lakhs are spent on macadamisation of one kilometre of length of road and with this amount i.e. Rs 200 crore, only 666 kilometre of roads can be blacktopped in the entire UT, which means 330 kms in Kashmir region and 330 kms in Jammu region,” they added.
They further informed that according to above statistics, each district will have funds for macadamisaion of only 30 kms which is negligible. Not only this, if the same parameter is applied assembly constituency wise then each constituency will have funds for around 3 kms road length.
“There are around 4000 kms of road length in each division, which need macadmisation and given by requirement, Rs 200 crore is too little amount for such a large need,” they said.
Pertinently, in order to improve road conditions and give major relief to the public, former Lieutenant Governor, G C Murmu had announced a macadamisation program for roads across the UT of Jammu & Kashmir in a meeting held last month.
The announcement was made in the backdrop of grievances relating to poor condition of roads and the problems connected thereto, presented before the former Lieutenant Governor during his tours as a part of his outreach programme. Following a detailed discussion with his Advisors, the Lieutenant Governor approved a program for 100% macadamisation of all roads in J&K but the Rs 200 crore will not make the things happen, sources claimed.
