Desperation at its peak
8/24/2020 12:04:49 AM

Nearly one year after the abrogation of J&K’s special status and its bifurcation into two union territories, Kashmir centric politicians have resurfaced with the so called “Gupkar Declaration” which they had signed just one day before August 5, 2019, when the Centre announced its decision to scrap J&K’s special status.
Leaders of the National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party, Peoples Conference, Awami National Conference and other political formations on Saturday came together and declared that they want J&K’s special status back. The Kashmir centric politicians beating their chest is nothing but a drama aimed at keeping themselves relevant. They are aware of the fact that Article 370 won’t be restored. They somehow want to make a comeback and tell the people that they are their leaders and can fight to seek everything back. But the fact of the matter is that they are a group of powerless people who cannot do anything except raising hue and cry.
These politicians are in no position to strike any deal with New Delhi as the past one year has proved that they don’t enjoy any mass following, and people are least bothered about what happens to them. The developments which have taken place after August 5, 2019 are an ample proof of the fact that J&K’s special status only benefitted the Kashmir centric politicians and not the people.
After abrogation of Articles 370 and 35-A these leaders are feeling insecure and lost. They are unable to digest the fact that neither the people nor New Delhi wants them back. The scandals and scams, which have come to fore during the past one year have surprised everyone. Common man was left amazed and dazed as he had never thought that the leaders, who claimed to be saints, didn’t allow the benefits of the centrally sponsored schemes to reach him. In fact the common man was not even aware about the schemes which were designed for his benefit.
The corruption and loans scams have created ripples across J&K. It has become clear that whosoever came into power in the erstwhile State used his good offices for the benefit of his kith and kin. The common people didn’t fit in their scheme of things. More than democracy they believed in monarchy and got away with everything.
The so-called Gupkar declaration is a farce aimed at hoodwinking the people again as these leaders lack courage to tell the people that for the past 70-years they have just lied to them.
