Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Aug 26: At a time when religious congregations and social functions are banned in Jammu & Kashmir a controversy has erupted since cultural programmes are all set to be hosted in North and South Kashmir in the coming days.
A senior leader would be the special guest at these cultural programmes set to be organized in Baramulla on August 29 and Mattan-Anantnag on August 30. The proposed organizing of the programmes has drawn flak from the public in general.
In Baramulla town the programme is being organized in a private school while as the venue for the Mattan programme has not been made public as yet.
Sources told Early Times that political party is behind the whole event and the name of a local person is being used as a cover up for the same.
“The organizing of the programmes is highly condemnable since Jammu & Kashmir is grappling with COVID-19 crisis. No religious congregation has been allowed over the past five and half months and how come the political party has decided to hold such events in Baramulla and Anantnag districts,” said a politician, wishing not to be named.
He said that when the annual Amarnath Yatra, Eid congregations and Muharram processions can’t be carried out how come a cultural programme can be held in Kashmir.
The Baramulla programme would start at 5 in the evening and it would continue till 9 PM. Although, the timing of Anantnag programme is not known yet, it is possible that the timing would be same as that of Baramulla programme.
It would be in place to mention here that Deputy Commissioner Baramulla has already imposed restrictions in the district from August 25 to 29 in view of spike in COVID-19 cases. In the Anantnag district restrictions have been imposed as well due to increase in Coronavirus cases.
