Serious differences in BJP over timing of restoring statehood to J&K

Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 26: Serious differences have reportedly been developed in J&K unit of BJP over the demand of restoring statehood. Party leaders are not on the same page on this important issue.
Credible sources said that a group within party is speaking in the voice of other political parties to restore statehood as early as possible to facilitate assembly elections in J&K. But other leaders, who have not tasted power, were opposed to restoring statehood at this time when Centre is taking some drastic steps to extend laws in J&K.
Credible sources said that a resolution to restore statehood was passed in the executive committee meeting of the party held on Tuesday but with some riders. “Those who tasted power during the PDP-BJP regime are desperate for assembly so such leaders are speaking language of other parties”, sources said and revealed that the group of ex-ministers, who enjoyed power first time in their life, were pressuring the party leadership to support the demand of restoring statehood as early as possible. There is a fear among these power hungry leaders that elections are not possible without restoring statehood.
Credible sources further disclosed that some senior leaders were opposed to this idea because they wanted to overhaul the whole system in J&K before restoring statehood. “Such leaders are very much aware that bringing radical changes in J&K is possible only through the UT administration. After restoration of statehood control of Centre would be minimized in J&K”, sources said.
Some senior BJP leaders have already stated that complete normalcy was imperative for the restoration of statehood to J&K. They have repeatedly said that statehood should be restored when terrorism will be completely wiped out from J&K and sustainable peace will be restored. They argued that restoring statehood without establishing lasting peace would sabotage the whole exercise of tackling terrorism in J&K.
