Caught in quandary
9/1/2020 12:27:49 AM

Pakistan praising the so-called Gupkar Declaration issued by the Kashmir centric political parties has put National Conference president Farooq Abdullah and others in a tight spot.
These parties have come together and announced that they will collectively fight to seek J&K’s special status back. They have stated that J&K’s reorganization is not acceptable to them.
Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi in a statement had said that the declaration issued by the NC, PDP, Congress and three other parties was “not an ordinary occurrence but an important development”.
Pakistan owning the Kashmir centric political parties has added to their woes. It means that they are toeing Pakistan’s line and in a way are supporting our rogue neighbor that has been sending terrorists into J&K and is hell bent upon to keep the conflict alive.
Soon after the Pakistan Foreign Minister issued a statement, NC president Farooq Abdullah shot back claiming that they are not puppets. He wanted to send a message to New Delhi that they have got nothing to do with Pakistan. If it’s so then these Kashmir centric parties should stop chest beating and acknowledge the fact that J&K’s special status has been abrogated and it has been merged completely with the Union of India.
Kashmir centric parties are playing a double game. On one hand these political outfits are trying to tell the people that they can get everything back while on the other hand they want to ensure that they don’t cross the line and end up in trouble.
Decision of the J&K administration to allow the political activities in the Valley left the Kashmir centric politicians confused as after August 5, 2019—when Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status and divided it into two union territories— these parties have been left with nothing to sell.
To remain relevant these parties have started harping about Gupkar Declaration. Pakistan Foreign Minister has added a new dimension to it by supporting the move of these parties. It appears that our rogue neighbor by doing so wants to create another separatist camp in Kashmir. But the Kashmir centric politicians are aware of the fact that if they change their sides they will lose the perks and privileges they have been enjoying for the past 70-years. Farooq Abdullah’s retort is nothing but an attempt to save himself and others from being openly labeled as the agents of Pakistan. These parties should realize that by opposing the Centre’s August 5, 2019 decision they are playing into the hands of Pakistan.
