Early Times Report

JAMMU, Oct 2: Government Medical College Jammu informed that there is ‘no shortage of Oxygen’ in the GMC and its Associated Hospitals across the Jammu division as the administration is extensively supervising usage of oxygen for Covid-19 and other patients.
In a statement to press, Dr Amit Kumar, President of the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) informed that GMC is continuously supervising the consumption of Oxygen, leaving aside the allegations regarding oxygen shortage in the hospitals. GMC-Jammu is leaving no stone unturned in providing adequate healthcare facilities to COVID-19 and other patients, he added.
Regarding the usage and consumption of Oxygen in the hospital, Dr Amit said that Oxygen cylinder type used in manifold are D-type with a capacity of 7000 liters and their utilization depends on number of patients and their condition. “COVID-19 patient, who are not on ventilator, usually require 10 to 15 lts oxygen per minute hence 600 to 900 ltrs of Oxygen is consumed per hour and we have adequate supply of the same.”
Clarifying the issue of oxygen consumption, Dr Sourabh Katoch, Member of Governing Council RDA, asserted that the patients who are suffering from COVID-19 requires 50 to 70 ltrs oxygen per minute hence 3000 to 4200 ltrs of oxygen per hour. Besides extra oxygen is also required for the patients during surgeries, anesthesia and in emergency wards.
Dr Sourabh Katoch said that GMC Emergency Ward and Room 4 wherein the patients are on critical condition, requires regular oxygen supply while Room 4 has eight ventilators on oxygen consumption beside 70 to 80 per cent patient requires oxygen.
“The hospital administration is striving hard to facilitate the treatment of the patients be it COVID or non -COVID as GMC Jammu being a territorial hospital. Besides, the frontline workers are putting their lives at risk and fighting the outbreak head-on,” Dr Sourabh Katoch said.
Dr Mukhtyar Khan, Secretary and Spokesperson RDA said that the Divisional Commissioner Jammu is personally supervising the oxygen supply in the hospital to ensure proper patient care.
Dr Mukhtyar Khan emphasized that another feather has been added to the cap of Principal GMC Jammu with the starting of much-awaited Plasma Therapy for COVID patients. “The Plasma Bank was set up and launched with the efforts of GMC Jammu Principal Dr Nasib Chand Digra under the guidance of Financial Commissioner Health and Medical Education Department Atal Dulloo,” he added.
