Early Times Report

REASI, Oct 2: The forest cover in a Panchayat in this district has virtually been devastated since a road has been constructed in the middle of the forest without seeking any legal opinion in this regard.
Sources told Early Times that few months back a road covering length of around two kilometers was constructed by Rural Development Department (RDD) in the Latter Panchayat. The road was constructed in the middle of forest cover with at least seven trees being damaged during the process.
“Whenever a road has to be constructed in the forest area necessary procedures have to be followed. It is important to seek legal opinion on this regard and in this case no such provision was followed.
No legal opinion was sought by RDD and it was due to the connivance of some officials that the road was constructed,” said sources.
Sources said that Range Officer Reasi, Virender Singh and beat guard Ram Ratan are the key ‘conspirators’ in this illegal work and so far no action has been taken against them. They said these officials in connivance with a powerful man constructed the road in violation of the standing rules and regulations.
Sources said that payment of more than one lakh rupees on account of construction of road has already been made. Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Reasi asked the Early Times to forward the photo of the road assuring that action would be taken in the case. Range Officer when contacted ignored the call of Early Times correspondent.
