Vehicle owners continue to wait for High Security Number Plates
Transport Deptt fails to digitize record

Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 18: Due to the alleged lackadaisical attitude of the Transport Department to digitize the record of old vehicles the unending wait to get the High Security Number Plates (HSRP) is continuing.
“People from far flung areas throng the RTO offices on the prescribed date given by vendors but have to return disappointed. The agents, who can manage HSRP on the same day after charging extra money from the customers, are calling the shots,” sources said.
They said that the Transport Department has got nothing to do with the HSRP as they have outsourced the work to the vendors, who have been harassing the customers. “I deposited fees for fixation of HSRP in first week of August in vendor’s office warehouse Jammu, since then I have visited same office at least 15 times but each time I with an assurance of next time”, said Gulshan Kumar, adding that staff always says that the vehicle details have not been updated by the transport office.
“We successfully dealing with hundreds of HSRP cases everyday but still there are some cases that get delayed due to failure of the transport department to update the vehicle details by the Transport Department. We actually are not at fault. It is the transport office that is responsible for delays. We also feel embarrassed when a client has to visit us time and again”, said an official of a private company hired by the Transport Department for HSRP fixation.
Sources informed that Regional Transport Officers (RTOs) have repeatedly taken up the issue of inordinate delay caused by the vendors to affix High Security Number Plates (HSRP) to vehicles, with the higher authorities but all in vain.
RTO Jammu Dhanater Singh did not answer the repeated phone calls for his comment over the issue.
However, Transport Commissioner J&K, Pradeep Kumar told this correspondent what the owner of old vehicles have to get their vehicles registered online by visiting concerned RTO.
