Winter Can Be Tough
11/3/2020 12:09:16 AM

The COVID-19 cases declining in Jammu region during the past few weeks have once again provided a chance to the officials of the Health Department to set the system right as experts have already sounded an alert about situation becoming difficult in winter months.
The people handling the healthcare system in Jammu region should learn from the mistakes which they committed in the past. They wasted an opportunity during lockdown to prepare themselves to fight COVID-19. When the cases increased in Jammu region it came to fore that the high end ventilators which were provided by the Centre for the critical patients couldn’t function as the oxygen plants in Jammu hospitals were incapable to feed these life saving machines.
The spike in the COVID cases had left the helmsmen red faced. They were caught napping and had no idea about how to deal with the crisis. One hopes that the people handling these hospitals remain prepared this time around to prevent the situation from taking an ugly turn.
The trials of COVID-19 vaccine are in the final phase and the protection against the virus is likely to come by the year end. But it may take many months for people to get vaccinated as huge population needs to be covered.
When the pandemic broke out in March this year, no one was aware about the characteristics of the virus but as on date doctors and experts know how to treat the patients and which medicines are working. The protocol has changed as the asymptomatic patients have to remain in home quarantine. Only those patients who are critically ill are being referred to the hospitals. But we can’t be complacent as no one can predict how the virus will behave during winter season.
People handling the Jammu hospitals should bear it in mind that they cannot hide behind the excuses anymore. They have to anticipate what could be in offing. If the COVID cases increase in winter they should be ready to handle the emergency situation. The ventilators and other life saving equipment that are available in Jammu hospitals need to be tried and tested to ensure that these machines work when they are needed.
The oxygen plants need to be kept fully prepared to prevent the repeat of the events which happened in the past. The COVID-19 is very much present within the community and this fact cannot be ignored till the people are vaccinated or they develop the herd immunity.
