Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 2: Despite allegations of discrimination and bungling in the selection list for the posts of drivers and firemen in the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, the department has allowed the selected candidates to join and has said that it would soon process the waiting list.
Protests as well as voices from various quarters, including the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), which always claimed that it would end the decades’ long discrimination with Jammu region, have failed move the department. Not even a probe which could have served as a face-saving measure has been ordered.
The Fire and Emergency Services Department had released the selection list for 98 posts of drivers and 598 posts of firemen on October 3. Several allegations were leveled by the aspirants, who had alleged leakage of examination papers as well as bungling in the selection lists.
In Jammu region it was seen as a continuation of decades old discrimination as according to some aspirants and activists not more than 10 percent selected candidates that was 70 out of total of 690 candidates, were from Jammu province.
The Congress, Panthers, BJP other social and political organizations had cast doubts over the selection list while supporting the aspirants who were left out. Some of the allegations leveled by aspirants were that posts were 7 years old and since then 3 exams were conducted and the last one was held on September 20. Allegations of leakage of exam papers, favouritism, candidates from Budgam district who had received leaked papers and had failed in physical tests also figured in the selection list beside others. The selection list had led to a series of protests in Jammu and people were demanding intervention of Lieutenant Governor and cancellation of the selection list. But all these voices have failed to push the department for even ordering a simple enquiry.
Administrative Officer in the office of Directorate General Fire and Emergency Services Mohammad Yaqoob Dar said that though the candidates have knocked the door of the court but the department has not initiated any enquiry as the selection process was done in a purely transparent manner.
Over the allegations of leakage of papers, Dar said these are baseless allegations. “The examination was conducted on September 20 and the selection list was issued on October 3 but for thirteen days, these aspirants remained silent. Afyter their names didn’t figure in the selection list, they started leveling allegations of papers being leaked,” he added.
About the recruitment process, the Administrative Officer said that the majority of selected candidates have already joined the department and those who have not joined, the department would shortly process the waiting list.
