Kupwara recorded 51.08% polls in 6th phase of DDC elections
If grievances addressed, there will be positive change, say voters

BARAMULLA, Dec 13: This time women folk have changed the trend of participation in the sixth phase of DDC election that was held today in the entire Kashmir division, especially in the north Kashmir, while the highest percentage of polls was recorded in Kupwara district.
As for as this north Kashmir district is concerned, there were two DDC constituencies includes Baramulla-1 and Rohama-8, there were 29349 electors in Baramulla and 42497 were in Rohama, among which 29.35% polls were recorded in Baramulla and 38.13% polls was recorded in Rohama, and the total percentage summed up at 34.54% polls in Baramulla district.
Despite the cold, people in large numbers came out to cast their votes for the phase-6 of District Development Council (DDC) elections in north Kashmir constituencies.
Mohammad Shaban 99 name changed cast his vote in Chandoosa DDC constituency, according to him that, “It is our democratic right to cast vote and elect the candidate; we should not stay idle in our homes, and women have changed this trend now, they participate more than men in this DDC election.
“Though it is very cold, but I don’t want to lose this opportunity, fact of the matter is that our village is just 18-20 kilometres away from district headquarter but we have seen no development since last 30 years now we have chosen person from our area and we are in hope that our village will also develop like other villages or model villages, voter told early times.
Notably in Kashmir, all polling stations are categorized as hypersensitive and sensitive.
Interestingly one of the voter from Kupwara district that recorded 51.08% today, said that, “we cast our vote, where as there are very few people who support political movements, because people in general have been betrayed and exploited in the past, but I believe if their grievances and hardships would be addressed, there will be a positive change on the ground, and that is why today we came out to cast our vote despite there are many challenges before us.
Meanwhile, the State Election Commissioner (SEC), K K Sharma on Sunday said that the people have once again reaffirmed their faith in democratic system by actively participating in the process underway to strengthen the same.
While giving a brief about the elections which were held today, the SEC said that polling was peaceful and people participated enthusiastically despite severe cold conditions in Kashmir division and some hilly areas of Jammu division.
Polling has been peaceful in all 31 constituencies of DDC including 14 in Kashmir division and polling was held in 2071 polling stations including 1208 from Kashmir division.
The SEC further informed that the Kashmir Division recorded 31.55% average voter turnout with Ganderbal district recording the highest polling at 58.45% followed by Kupwara District at 51.08% and Bandipora with 47.66% and Baramulla 34.56% polling.
