Five day tour to visit nomadic communities organized

Jammu, Dec 17: A five days tour was organised to visit the Nomadic camp of Kharnak Dadh and Ponka nau, Samad Rockchan w.e.f 09/12/2020 to 14/12/2020 under the SERB DST Project entitled “Production Improvement of Changthangi Sheep by Technological Intervention for Livelihood Improvement of Changpa Nomads of Ladakh’’.
The team comprises of Dr Khurshid A Dar (Sr Scientist Agrostology), Dr Sabia Asmat (Scientist Home Science), Dr FA Shah Khan (Scientist Agroforestry), Miss Bushra Khan (Junior Research Fellow) lead by Dr Feroz Din Sheikh Principal Investigator of the project/ Head KVK Leh. More than 200 animals were treated for different ailments, essential veterinary medicines and inventories were distributed to the nomads free of cost under the project. Around 1820 Changthangi Sheep belonging to the project beneficiaries were tagged using AllFlex Tags. The team experts organised Training programme on Management of Livestock during Winter, Livestock Product processing and development and Management of high land pasture grasses under the SERB-DST Project. The programme was attended by more than 45 nomadic families, including village Nambardars and Sarpanch. The trainings were also attended by Kunday Spaldey Ama Tsogspa Samad and Dr Sabia Asmat enlighten them with various livestock product processing technology.
Dr Khurshid and Dr Shah Khan gave the techniques of rotational grazing and improvement of pasture grasses. The Sarpanch of Kharnak Mr Tsering Angchuk and Sarpanch of Samad Lundup Gyatso thanked the team for visiting their village in peak winter and addressing their problems which occur mainly during winter. The team has worked at an altitude of more than 15000ft above sea level with minimum temperature of -32degrees. The main problem faced by the nomads were feed and fodder scarcity, wild attacks of livestock and lack of knowledge in management of livestock during winter.
