Mysterious blast at SKUAST Kashmir under scanner
Employees demand probe
12/17/2020 11:23:23 PM
Early Times Report

Srinagar, Dec 17: A mysterious blast at the SK University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Kashmir here has triggered panic among the employees with many of them demanding high level inquiry into the matter.
On December 8, at least three employees of the SKUAST were wounded in an explosion in one of the main offices at the varsity.
While the SKUAST authorities had initially claimed it to have happened due to short-circuit in the photo-stat machine installed there, many of the employees said the actual cause of explosion was substandard heating system at the office and that a “shady deal could not be ruled out.”
Sources said there had been repeated complaints that the gas cylinder and the heaters used at the SKUAST- K were not upto the mark and that such heating devices would frequently leak.
Sources said the wounded employees have received serious burn injuries and that the authorities were trying to downplay the issue.
“How can a case of explosion that leaves three employees badly wounded be swept under the carpet? There is a need for a high level inquiry to know the reason behind the explosion and if substandard heating arrangements are being used to risk the lives of the poor employees,” said a delegation of employees on the condition of anonymity. They said there was every possibility that substandard gas heaters were purchased by the purchase committee. “Why shouldn’t there be an audit of heating arrangements,” the employees said. While the police have filed a case into the incident, the employees demanded a probe by an external agency.
“Office of the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir should order an inquiry because underhand in deals in procurement of heating arrangements worth lakhs cannot be ruled out,” the employees said.
When contacted a senior official at the SKUAST Kashmir said the police have filed a case and that the cause of blast was being ascertained.
Meanwhile the employees have appealed Raj Bhawan to personally look into the matter.
