Early Times Report

SUNDERBANI, Dec 17: For the past 20 years or so work has been going on the construction of an irrigation canal in the Siote sub-division of this tehsil in the Nowshera division in the Rajouri district and the same has been shown as completed by the Irrigation & Flood Control department.
Sources told Early Times that the work on the irrigation canal covering an area of around six kilometers started in 2000 with the total project cost being two crores. With the construction of the irrigation canal farmers of at least five villages in the Nallah Panchayat would have been benefitted but that was not to be.
“For the past two decades the construction work has been going on but the irony is that the department has shown that the work has been completed 10 years back. The cost of the project has reached 2.75 crores meaning that there has been an overshoot of 75 lakhs or so,” said sources.
Sources said that as sub-standard material has been used in the construction the irrigation canal has caved in at many places. They said that although the complaints have been lodged with the higher-ups many times no action whatsoever has been taken up to this moment of time.
The locals of the area have demanded probe from Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) or Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) so that truth comes out and punitive action is taken against the erring officials. They have also urged the LG Manoj Sinha to intervene in the matter so that justice is done.
When contacted, concerned AEE K K Kachru said that due to ongoing District Development Council (DDC) elections staff could not be posted for operating canal However, a senior officer said that AEE would be sent to the area soon and in case he fails to do so then stern action would be taken against him.
