EARLY TIMES REPORT

SRINAGAR, Dec 18: In the past admission for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) course at the University of Kashmir was not easy however the situation has changed of late. The admission for the PhD has become easy for the kith and kith of the faculty members while as ‘restrictions’ continue for the ‘less privileged’.
Sources told Early Times that the kith and kin of many of the faculty members at the university are having free access to the admission for PhD courses in the different subjects. The situation is grim in the Faculty of Social Sciences with the competition levels being maintained to a great extent at the Faculty of Sciences and Faculty of Management Studies.
Sources said that the Department of History has come up as a perfect ‘rehabilitation centre’ for the relatives of some of the senior faculty members. They said that these faculty members have given free entry to kith and kin in the department for pursuing the PhD course while the deserving ones are not given a chance to pursue the course.
“A senior faculty member managed to get his son, daughter and nephew admitted for the PhD course at the department. on contractual basis. Not long back yet another senior faculty member did the same with respect to his son, daughter and daughter in law in the same department with the deserving ones being forced to bite the dust,” said sources.
Sources said that most of the students who pass their post graduate examination with flying colours do not get the chance to pursue the PhD course since the limited seats are taken by the kith and kin of some faculty members. They said the meritorious students get dejected as their chances of entering the department get diminished after they are not admitted for the PhD course.
“These students pass their examination with high grades from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi University (DU), Jamia Millia Islamia, Aligarh Muslim University, University of Kashmir and other varsities of the country. However, their dreams of making it big don’t come off since they are not able to pursue research by getting admitted for PhD course,” said sources.
Sources said that admission notice for PhD course in the Faculty of Social Sciences is no more than a ‘fake’ since the selection is not fair. They said that if proper parameters are followed in the process then the kith and kin of the faculty members can’t be admitted for the PhD course at the varsity campus.
