To benefit ‘land mafia’, admin resumes construction of illegal bridge in Srinagar
Locals seek Raj Bhawan intervention

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Dec 25: In “criminal violation of norms” the administration has resumed work for the completion of bridge illegally constructed on the flood spill channel in Srinagar here to benefit “land mafia.”
In the shocking development, the Irrigation and Flood Control Department has resumed work to complete construction of illegally constructed bridge on the spill channel in Rawal Pora locality of Srinagar. The work on the bride was started during the previous Peoples Democratic Party –Bharatiya Janta Party regime.
The officials confirmed to Early Times that work on the bridge was grossly illegal as the concerned agencies including the IFCD have not issued clearance for the bridge and that there was no chance of the said construction getting a nod.
“Construction of such a bridge with multiple spans is not allowed on the flood channels lest it hinders flow of waters during the floods,” said a senior engineer in the flood control department on the condition of anonymity.
He said the department has already received complaints that the construction of the bridge has made the Rawal Pora and Hyderpora localities more flood prone.
“Instead of a probe into the construction of such illegal bridge and misuse of government money, the government is spending more money on this and this is something which needs to be stopped,” he said.
Sources said a “land mafia” having eye on land in area wants to get the bridge completed so that the land can be sold at higher prices to benefit the “masters of land brokers”.
Sources said the land mafia had been touch with some senior officials for the last few months adding that the some “deal” may have been stuck between the two parties.”
“Otherwise how will officials allow such a criminal work to be undertaken out of government money when they know it’s grossly unlawful,” said middle rung official on the condition of anonymity.
Meanwhile the locals have appealed Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to personally look into the matter.
“A few months ago floods had hit the area as the waters in the spill channel spilled over the canal as the flood bearing capacity has been drastically reduced due to this illegally constructed bridge,” agreed a senior engineer of the flood control department on the condition of anonymity.
