Irrelevance looks inevitable
12/29/2020 11:29:52 PM
The Congress Party is in dire straits in Jammu region where it couldn’t open its account in many districts in the recently held District Development Council elections.
The “grand old party” of the country is in a big mess across the country and Jammu region is no exception. The recently held DDC elections have proved one thing beyond doubt that the Jammu is no more a bastion of the Congress Party and it stands nowhere.
The party that shared power in J&K for 12 consecutive years from 2002 to 2014 first with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and then with the National Conference as on date is struggling to remain relevant. The Congress leaders need to sit back and introspect to know what has gone wrong. The possibilities about the Congress Party getting revived look bleak. The veteran leaders who could have held the party together stand side lined as they had demanded change in the leadership of All India Congress Committee.
None of the top Congress leaders arrived in J&K to campaign for their candidates in the DDC polls and the dismal performance of the party in these elections is an indication that the “grand old party” did not take these polls seriously and allowed situation to drift away. The new AICC incharge for J&K visited the Jammu only once for the campaigning that too after the four phases of DDC the polls had ended. The Congress Party in Jammu region is on a very weak wicket as other parties have strengthened their foothold and have made inroads into the areas which were once considered to be the strongholds of the “grand old party” of the country.
There are many reasons for the debacle of the Congress Party in the Jammu region. The biggest cause is that the party high command relied on Kashmir centric leaders and didn’t allow leaders in Jammu to grow. The Congress Party in J&K during the past few years has become the fiefdom of the Kashmir centric leaders and they are the ones who are calling the shots. Many prominent leaders, including former ministers, were forced to change their turf as they couldn’t withstand the humiliation they were subjected to.
Speculations are rife that assembly polls in J&K may get delayed till 2022 as the delimitation process may take ten more months to get completed. The Congress Party can utilize this time to rebuild its base in Jammu. If it fails to do so then no one can stop the party from becoming completely irrelevant.
