Early Times Report

Anantnag, Dec 29: In South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, the Rural Development Department has allegedly procured poor quality furniture, Early Times learnt on Tuesday.
Bashir Ahmad Najar, who heads South Kashmir Small Scale Unit Holders Association, alleged that the officials of Rural Development Department were receiving the items without checking the quality of the products delivered to them by the units through GeM portal.
“At Achabal and Shangus I found newly procured furniture very defective. Broken chairs, damaged lockers have been delivered and no officer has the guts to return this damaged and substandard furniture to the units holders we have delivered it,” Bashir Ahmad Najar said.
He claimed to have visited at least four blocks in Anantnag and got the broken furniture filmed. “I have filmed the defective furniture that has been delivered at block Achabal,” he claimed.
Najar said that officers weren’t checking the quality at the time of receiving supply. “The officers including Block Development Officers are supposed to check what they receive but here surprisingly the officers that they are only counting the items they receive from the supplier,” he said.
He said that the suppliers, in league with senior officers of the Rural Development Department, were deliberately delivering low quality and substandard items to the department.
“There will be huge differences in terms of quality between the samples and the supplies they have delivered in various blocks of South Kashmir,” he said.
Block Development Officer Achabal, on being contacted, told Early Times that they weren’t checking the quality of items at the time of receiving them.
“Quality of products is being checked at the time of placing orders. When we receive the supply we just check the quantity and not the quality,” he added.
Block Officer said that some items delivered to them have minor issues and one can easily correct those faults.
“Yes, if any item has a major defect that can be returned back to the supplier,” he said on being asked.
He said that the quality of the procured items is being checked by the procurement committee only.
