Alleged custodial death of truck driver in Police Station
‘Deceased was booked in bovine smuggling case’

KATHUA, Jan 3: The family members of Amandeep Singh, a truck driver alleged his murder in police custody for not paying a bribe of Rs 2.5 lacs demanded by some officials of Police Station Hiranagar Kathua. He (Amandeep) was arrested by Hiranagar Police on December 22, 2020 for transporting bovine, said family members protesting outside Kathua hospital, where the body of the deceased has been kept. They refuse to take the body until a case a murder case against the accused police officials, who killed him. “He was arrested on December 22, since then some officials of the Police Station were calling us to pay money for his release. They were demanding Rs 2.5 lacs, we were arranging money, meanwhile today police informed us about mysterious death of Amandeep”, said the agitating family members, they threatened administration if they failed to take action against murderer police officials, they would block Jammu-Pathankot road.
“They (Police) told us the body was recovered from, Dinga Amb area yesterday. But when we checked the body it raises suspicion over the Police version as the clothes on his body was clean and dry despite rain”, they said, adding that if he was freed why Police was calling family members to bring money.
“One of the police officers contacted us that he will release all vehicles if we pay him the bribe demanded by him. He kept claiming that Amandeep was in Police custody, but today they ask us to take his body”, they alleged and added Police is trying to hush up the case.
