Early Times Report

Srinagar, Jan 3: In cash-starved Jammu and Kashmir where the government discourages extravagance, the Kashmir University here has been spending millions on purchase of new luxury vehicles.
Sources said in the last around two years, the Kashmir University has spend around Rs one crore on purchase and maintenance of luxury vehicles used by the top- officials at the KU. It was reliably learnt that the Raj Bhawan has received complaint in this regard and that a probe was likely to be ordered soon.
Sources said from Toyota Fortuner to Toyota Crysta and Tata Safari to Tata Innova numerous such vehicles have been purchased.
Sources said the first such purchase was made in 2018 when the office of the Vice Chancellor procured a sedan worth Rs 25 lakh for the use of the VC.
Sources said the office of the incumbent VC has purchased a new sedan worth around Rs two million.
Sources two more such luxury vehicles have also been procured in the last around two years.
The sources said the KU staff has already raised objections over such “extravagance” and that they have approached the Raj Bhawan with a complaint in this regard.
“We have send a complaint to the Raj Bhawan that when more and money should be spend on education, the funds meant for brining in excellence in academic activities are being misused on the purchase of luxury vehicles for the ‘Maharajas’ of the university,” said a delegation of teachers at the KU on the condition of anonymity.
The teachers said there was a need for a high-level probe into all such alleged irregularities so that the misuse of government money comes to an end.
“This is gross misuse of the funds as given by the University Grants Commission,” the delegation said.
When contacted a senior official downplayed the matter saying that the vehicles were procured from funds meant for expenditure on transportation and that otherwise the funds would have lapsed.
Meanwhile the KU staff have appealed Lieutenant Governor to personally look into the matter.
