Schools with poor infrastructure to welcome students after 11 months

UDHAMPUR, Jan 24: As the schools in J&K are preparing for reopening after 11 months following their closure due to the series of lockdowns clamped in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.
While high schools and higher secondary schools in Jammu division will reopen from February 1, the other schools including primary and middle will start functioning from February 8.
However, poor infrastructure of a large number of government schools awaits the students in some rural areas of Udhampur district as during the period of last eleven months concerned authorities failed to initiate repair of the damaged buildings of these educational institutions.
Sources informed that there are nearly 188 schools in total in tehsils Pancheri and Mongri in Udhampur district which include 5 higher secondary schools and 13 high schools while rest of them are primary and middle schools .
Sources further informed that almost all the five higher secondary schools in these tehsils have ICT labs but there is no staff to operate the ICT lab in one of the higher secondary schools out of five meant for computer education.
They also informed that about 177 schools in tehsils Pancheri and Mongri lack boundary wall while 132 schools have no playground.
"About 10 schools in these areas have damaged buildings and these schools include Middle School (MS) Galyot, MS Sanga, MS Saddal, Pry School Saddal, PS Lower Chappad etc," reliable sources informed.
They also said that in the devastating floods and landslides of 2014 two schools of Saddal, primary and middle, were completely washed away and the students of these institutions now undergo studies in private property acquired by the education department on either rent basis or as volunteer aid.
Sources said even kitchen sheds of some schools have been blown away and no repair work has been initiated since then.
When contacted, Jasbir Singh, newly elected independent Member of District Development Council, Pancheri said after assuming his office he will work in coordination with the district administration to ensure modernization of schools in these tehsils.
He informed that Pangar area in Mongri and Galiot area in Pancheri need a higher secondary school each as students in some hamlets have to walk for about two hours to reach their schools after qualifying class 10th.
He also lamented that there was no upgradation of some of the schools for the last 20-30 years nor the damaged buildings were repaired while washrooms available in most of the schools are in dilapidated condition as they are not properly maintained and lack water facilities.
