Bird Flu:Dead crows found positive in Sopore village, alert sounded

BARAMULLA, Jan 29: Hardushiva village of Sopore town has been declared as "Alert Zone" after samples of dead crows were found positive for Avian Influenza virus H5N8 by the ICAR NISHAD.
According to an order vide no: DCB/PS/9654-66 dated: 29/01/2020 that reads, Director Animal Husbandry Department Kashmir vide letter no: DAHK/Tech/A-59/15949-56 Dated 29/01/2021 has intimated that a sample of dead crow for Hardushive Sopore has been declared positive for Avian Influenza virus (H5N8) by the ICAR NISHAD and it has been surveillance of the affected area be intensified beside declaring the epicenter as Alert zone to check the spread of the Influenza.
The order further reads that, now therefore, in view of above, a radius of 10K from the epicenter, that is Hardishiva Sopore is hereby declared as, "Alert Zone". Accordingly, the Animal Husbandry department shall keep the whole area under surveillance and conduct random sampling within 1 KM of the epicenter.
Chief Animal Husbandry Officer Baramulla, WildLife Warden north and divisional forest officer Kamraj shall intensify surveillance with the notified zones and shall also conduct random sampling of organized poultry farms and backyard poultry units with alert zones, besides keeping a vigil on other birds, reads an order that is in possession of early times.
The order further said that, Bio-security has to be strengthened and disinfection in the entire areas where the mortality in birds has been reported, to be carried out in collaboration with the forest department.
The dead birds (if any) should be disposed of by deep burial. For sample collection and testing, the whole bird may be sent to the lab, dead birds should not be open without ensuring biosafety and zoo sanitary measures.
Surveillance of poultry may be also intensified in the areas assigned to prevent spread of disease to poultry and human beings, the guidelines already circulated by Animal Husbandry may be adhered to in letter and spirit.
Forest and wildlife shall take all necessary measures to prevent the spread of disease, an updated report in respect of the aforesaid area/ epicenter shall be sent immediately to the animal husbandry department as well as this office.
Order also said that, Thesildar/ SHO concerned shall keep a strict vigil in the said area and shall ensure the advisory is adhered to in letter and spirit. They shall remain in contact with nodal officer bird flu (Poultry development officer, Baramulla.
