President of Peoples Democratic Party and former chief minister of erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state, Mehbooba Mufti has vindicated the people who had opposed her move to drag her brother Tasaduq Mufti into politics.
Mehbooba had made her brother join the politics soon after the death of her late father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. But his inexperienced brother failed to deliver. Mehbooba ensured that he gets the best possible deal and was given the Tourism portfolio in his sister’s cabinet. But now she has admitted that Tasaduq joining politics was a “wrong decision.”
Mehbooba tried to groom Tasaduq but couldn’t succeed. From the day one, the junior Mufti was at loggerheads with the senior PDP leaders and couldn’t get along with them. Things worsened when he was inducted into the cabinet and seniors were ignored. Many believe that Tasaduq’s out of turn entry into council of ministers had sown the seeds of discord in the PDP which finally led to the party getting split.
After the BJP pulled out from PDP led coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir, Tasaduq vanished from the scene and showed no interest in the happenings that were taking place around him. His indifferent approach created lot of problems for Mehbooba as she had to face the volley questions from her party leaders. These leaders reminded Mehbooba about the fact that they stood with her when everyone deserted the party and they didn’t expect Tasaduq to disappear from the scene when the party was in crisis.
Now, it’s clear that Tasaduq won’t return to politics again and his chapter has been closed. It seems he too has realized that the PDP has no future and the party has hit a dead end. Mehbooba is facing a difficult situation. Her party winning just 26 seats in the recently held District Development Council (DDC) elections across J&K has made it clear that the PDP is in deep trouble and it can end up becoming irrelevant if the people associated with the party don’t stop fighting with each other. If Mehbooba keeps on indulging in rhetoric by raising the issues which have been pushed under the carpet she will end up in more trouble as none of the PDP leaders seem interested in pursuing the issues that have been buried. Mehbooba needs to put her act together if she wants to hold on to the remnants of her party.
