Srinagar, Jan 30; People in the Kashmir valley, including summer capital, Srinagar, continued to face severe water shortage as taps remained frozen due to cold wave conditions which could continue during the next 24 hours in the region.
However, the 40-km-long Chilai-Kalan, the harshest period of winter will end at 2400 hrs tonight which will be followed by 20-day-long Chilai-Khurd from tomorrow and 10-day-long Chilai Bacha before the onset on spring.
Srinagar recorded coldest day of the January when the maximum temperature witnessed a drop and settled at 2.1 degree on Friday, which was 5.4 degree below normal while the minimum temperature was minus 7.2 degree on Saturday, 6.2 notches below normal.
However, the people had slight relief this afternoon when the Sun appeared from behind the clouds in the valley, where snow remained frozen on roof tops and both sides of roads.
The Met department spokesman told that the weather will remain mainly dry over Jammu and Kashmir with morning mist. There could be isolated rain and snow during the subsequent 48 hours, he added.
People continued to suffer as water taps remained frozen in summer capital, Srinagar and outskirts as severe cold conditions continued though there was slight improvement in the minimum temperature. Against yesterdays minus 7.7 degree, it was minus 7.2 degree, which was 6.2 notches below normal.
It was coldest day in Srinagar when the maximum temperature recorded 2.1 degree, 5.4 notches below normal on Friday, spokesman said.
Meanwhile, residents from almost all parts of the city, including outskirts complained of water shortage. ''Our taps remained frozen for the past two days,'' a resident from Badshah Nagar Natipora, Nissar Ahmad said. People were seen using tube-well water.
Due to severe cold wave conditions hundreds of water motors were damaged in Srinagar during the past 48 hours.
The Spokesman said the sky could be partly cloudy to very light snow and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 3 degree and minus 7 degree respectively in Srinagar during the next 24 hours.
Pahalgam, a health resort in south remained coldest in the valley at minus 12.5 degree followed by Kokernag minus 10.9 degree.
World famous ski resort of Gulmarg recorded minus 10 degree minimum temperature while the maximum temperature there was minus 2.6 degree on Friday. However, despite biting cold wave conditions, hundreds of tourists and skiers are arriving there from different parts of the country daily.
Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir recorded minus 8.8 degree and Kupwara minus 3.7 degree minimum temperature. |
