EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Feb 13: In a political drama unfolded in Kishtwar District during the election process to Chairperson and Vice Chairperson, the National Conference rebel and her husband along with Independent member from Marwah Sheikh Zafrullah joined the three member BJP to boycott the today's election forcing the District Election Officer to postpone the elections due to lack of quorum.
The election for Chairperson and Vice Chairperson was scheduled at 11.30 am in the multipurpose hall of DC office Kishtwar, but out of 14 members, only 9 members including 6 from National Conference and 3 from Congress turned up for the meeting while NC rebel member Sharifa Begum and another Independent member from Marwah Sheikh Zafarullah decided not to attend the meeting along with three members of BJP.
After making the announcement with regard to power sharing agreement by the NC and Congress yesterday, Congress party in order to keep the flock together including the independent DDC member from Marwah spent the night in the house of former Congress Minister Ghulam Mohammad Saroori, but surprisingly the Marwah DDC member disappeared from the house of Saroori at the outset of dawn.
"He left the house on the pretext of offering the morning prayers and to change his clothes but didn't return back and escaped along with BJP members and NC rebel" Congress sources told Early Times.
The sources said that boycotting the election meeting looks like preplanned conspiracy between the Apni Party, BJP, NC rebel and independent member from Marwah since similar ploy was adopted in Ramban and Rajouri District which were going to hold DDC Chairperson and Vice Chairperson elections and in all the three Districts, NC/Congress combine were certain to elect their Chairpersons and Vice-Chairpersons.
As the day progressed, the NC-Congress members kept waiting for return of the NC rebel and the independent DDC member from Marwah, but both didn't turn up, however, later Apni Party announced the joining of NC rebel from Thakrie Sharifa Begum and her husband Farooq Ahmed Kripak who happened to be the Sarpanch from Thakrie block joined the Apni Party beside also vouches for the support to NC rebel member for the post of Chairperson.
"Is it a women empowerment or husband empowerment who all during the day speaks on behalf of his member wife who remain elusive from the scene," said angry NC workers who were waiting for declaration of the election results which were later deferred on the pretext of lack of quorum.
"We keep trying to bring Marwah DDC member till meeting was postponed but he didn't return and instead preferred to hobnob with the BJP and Apni Party," said angry Congress party leader who feel ditched by DDC member Marwah, adding that if he had any problem with NC, he could easily had to abstain by voting only in favour of Congress party candidate.
Both Congress and NC accused the BJP of indulging in horse trading as well as pressure tactics to enforce their agenda.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar said that "Election for the post of Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of District Development Council Kishtwar was today postponed due to lack of mandated 2/3rd quorum for the elections."
