EARLY TIMES REPORT

UDHAMPUR, Feb 16: The dues of MGNREGA works done by Rural Development Department (RDD) in J&K during BJP-PDP coalition government in the years from 2016-18 have swollen to the staggering amount in hundreds of crores. Sources informed that funds for MGNREGA works were meant for development in villages wherein small works of making tracks, small bridges etc are done and 60 percent expenditure is made on labour and 40 per cent on materials.
Insiders at RDD informed that under political influence and pressure the officers of RDD shifted these funds for construction of even big bridges which incurred huge expenditure which the government of India is now reluctant to pay as the basis norms of MGNREGA were violated.
In Udhampur district alone liability of about Rs 30-35 crore of MGNREGA works is due to labourers (Mistry’s) and for material.
Insiders informed that while the government of India paid for the MGNREGA works executed in the year 2019 -20 and 2020-21 it is not paying funds for the earlier works which has led to crisis among the poor labourers.
Prakash, Ex-Panch said he accomplished the work of a path from badh to Amboo in Ward 2, tharmada , Panchayat thanoha of block Jaganoo in Udhampur in the year 2017 and there was a liability of Rs. 5.90 lakh of which he only got Rs. 3 lakh while the remaining amount of material and Mistries is pending.
Similarly, ex-Sarpanch Kamlu Ram said he made a culvert in Ward 7 at Rakh thanoha , Panchayat thanoha , block Jaganoo and was paid nothing till date.
ADDC Ashok Kumar when contacted said many people come to his office for MGNREGA money and he in turn make details and forward it to his higher authorities.
He also said that funds are being paid for the present works but for the works done earlier, centre is not releasing any funds.
“However, LG is also in the know of this and he is taking the issue with centre and soon we expect that funds might be released,” he maintained.
