Environmental related norms thrown to winds in JK UT
77 out of 136 industries in Kashmir, 2 out of 162 in Jammu operate without ETPs

JAMMU, Mar 8: In open violation of environmental related norms, several industries across Jammu and Kashmir have been operating without functioning Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs), causing massive damage to the environment of a sensitive Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
According to the report submitted to the Central Pollution Control Board for the month of January 2021 on Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs)/ Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs)/CETP, it has been informed that there are a total of 298 industrial units which require Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) as these industries units have been discharging dangerous effluents.
Out of these total industrial units, 79 have been operating without functional ETPs while 219 have functioning ETPs. Maximum of the industrial units, which have been violating the norms regarding establishing of ETPs, are in Kashmir valley as out of total 136 industrial units in Kashmir valley 77 are operating without functioning ETPs, while 59 have functional ETPs.
The report further disclosed that out of these 77 industrial units, which have been operating without functional ETPs, show-cause notices have been served to 64 industrial units, while directions are also issued for closure of 10 units under environmental norms.
While in case of Jammu based industrial units, show-cause notice has also been issued against the 2 industrial units violating environmental norms.
Moreover in case of Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs), the report explains that there are a total of 455 STPs, a total of 61 are not complying with the environmental related norms, while a maximum that is 394 are complying with the norms. Taking action against the erring STPs for not following norms, Pollution Control Board has issued show-cause notice against 50 STPs for violations, while closure directions were also issued against 6 STPs.
