Record 500 athletes turn up for 19th State Championship

JAMMU, Mar 19: The 19th J&K Athletics Championship received tremendous response with nearing 500 athletes from all corners of the Union Territory competing for the top honours in the three-day competition being organised by J&K Amateur Athletics Association (JKAAA) on University of Jammu grounds, here today.
The event is also marked to celebrate ‘Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav’ and being held in collaboration with Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, JU and under the aegis of Athletics Federation of India (AFI), J&K Sports Council (JKSC) and J&K Olympic Association (JKOA).
The mega meet was declared open by Vice Chancellor, JU, Prof Manoj K Dhar in the presence of vice president of Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Dr Ashutosh Sharma, Director Sports and Physical Education, Daud Iqbal Baba and president of JKAAA, Suneel Mahajan.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest was happy to see such a big crowd of athletes taking part in the championship. He promised all support and assistance in making such events a grand success in future too. The Vice Chancellor advised the organising committee to strictly observed the Covid-19 guidelines issued by the Government to protect the athletes from any kind of virus spread.
Earlier, president of JKAAA, Suneel Mahajan welcomed the distinguished guests amidst presentation of a detailed report of the competition. General secretary of the Association, Sharat Chander Singh expressed gratitude on behalf JKAAA, to the Vice Chancellor, JU and other guests for encouraging the athletes. He also thanked J&K Police, especially the office of ADGP (Armed) and Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) for infrastructural assistance and officials supports in the smooth conduct the event.
Prominent among others present were Ravinder Singh (senior vice president, JKAAA), Sarwant Singh Gill (general secretary, JKSC), Ajay Sharma (treasurer), Ravi Salgotra (treasurer JKSC), Vikas Gupta (secretary, J&K Judo Association).
Representatives from district units of the Association present were Manu Wazir (Reasi), Rahul Bakshi (Reasi), Bhushan Singh (Baramulla), Riaz Ahmed (Anantnag), Sahil Raina (Rajouri) and Vikas (Poonch).
The technical penal for the event comprised Ramesh Sharma (retired SAI coach), Gurcharan Singh (JKSC), Nirmal Singh, Sarabjeet Singh, Chamel Singh, Gurbhachan Singh, Bharat Bhushan, Harsimran, Kiren Kumari, Aman Sambyal, Harbinder Singh, Pawandeep Kaur, Rakesh Singh Charak and Parveen Singh.
Earlier, the opening day witnessed finals of a couple of track events.
