Assembly Polls In J&K
3/20/2021 12:09:58 AM
Union Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, recently informed the Parliament that assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held after the delimitation exercise is completed in the newly carved out union territory.
The Delimitation Commission has got a one year extension but many people believe that the commission would complete the exercise much before the stipulated time. There is every possibility about polls being held by this year-end.
Kashmir centric leaders like former J&K chief ministers, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti have been claiming that the elections won’t be held so soon. It seems these leaders have realized that even if the polls are held they won’t be able to do anything much as their political careers are almost over. They are aware of the fact that after August 5, 2019, the political scenario in J&K has changed drastically and they along with others have turned into non entities.
Elections getting delayed is good for them. Both Omar and Mehbooba are aware of the fact that Article 370 won’t come back but they have been talking about it just to keep themselves relevant. It’s an established fact that restoration of statehood only can bring these politicians back into the game but if J&K continues to remain a union territory, politicians irrespective of the party they belong to will have to act as second fiddles.
Whenever assembly elections are held in Jammu and Kashmir they will be of great significance. It will be for the first time in the past 70-years that Jammu and Kashmir regions will send almost equal number of representatives to the assembly. During the past seven decades Kashmir has had an upper hand. The Kashmir centric leaders during all these years never allowed any Dogra to become the chief minister of J&K on the pretext that Kashmir sends more members to the assembly.
The delimitation of the assembly constituencies was a long pending demand of the people from Jammu region. But the former rulers always ignored it. People of Jammu are eagerly waiting for the completion of the delimitation exercise. But the leaders in Jammu need to bear in mind that power comes with the responsibility. They have to ensure that they live upto the expectations of people irrespective of J&K remaining as union territory or getting its statehood back. The forthcoming assembly polls that will be held after the delimitation exercise is completed will prove to be a turning point in the history of Jammu and Kashmir.
