Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 22: Resentment is brewing among the tourism players of Kashmir against some official for allegedly patronizing a particular group of “influential hoteliers at the cost of the business interests of the larger business community in the valley.”
Sources said at a recently held high level meeting in Srinagar with the officials from the Union Tourism ministry, including Union Tourism Secretary, some of the “influential businessmen who have been beneficiaries of the dynasts were given undue space to speak of their personal interests before the visiting delegates.”
“Instead of the common tourism players who actually contribute towards the sector, a particular group of hoteliers who are actually bank defaulters to tune of hundreds of crores and look ahead to sell off their property were projected before the visiting dignitaries as being business leaders of Kashmir. This is really bad,” said a delegation of tourism players on the condition of anonymity.
Sources said the said coterie of hoteliers in Kashmir was trying to hijack the tourism promotion for their vested interests. “These hoteliers are neck deep into bank loans or happen to be defaulters worth hundreds of crores and to hide their misgivings they want to be projected as the tourism leaders of Kashmir,” the sources said.
Some of the tourism players said some of the officials in the tourism department of Kashmir were patronizing the selected hoteliers for their personal interests.
“Such hoteliers are known for being chamchas. They knew how to keep the babus or mantris happy and now as there are no Abdullahs or Muftis, such businessmen are appeasing some particular officials in Kashmir tourism,” said the tourism players.
They appealed the Lieutenant Governor to order an inquiry into the allegedly misgivings in the holding of meeting where the Union Tourism secretary was also present.
“If officials can play mischief before the visiting team from the Union government, their conduct in other cases can only be imagined,” the tourism players said.
A tourism official on the condition of anonymity however denied the allegations. He added that invitations for the said meeting with the Tourism Secretary from New Delhi were sent to all the genuine stakeholders.
