BARAMULLA, May 22: The road connecting Village Garkote in Sub Division Uri is posing a big-time trouble to locals here in this north Kashmir district.
According to local residents that, landslides in the areas, due to road winding has emerged as a major problem as it leads to disruptions in the vehicular movement.
A solution to this challenge is not just to ensure smooth roads for the movement of a vehicle, but also a smooth movement for the locals who are facing hardships due to poor road condition, said locals from Garkote area.
They said that the roads were being constructed by Pradan Mantri Grameen Sadak Youjhna (PMGSY) last year.
Local believe that, a landslides, huge patches, uprooted trees and boulders that had blocked the route, leaving commuters stranded for many times.
The PMGSY authorities were soon informed about the situation, but they didn’t took the matter seriously, due to which locals are facing multiple problems, said Bashir Ahmad of Garkote village of Uri area. Locals further said that, “People are facing various problems on daily basis from Lagama to Mohri Garkote, earlier the road was short in width but was better. Now, the road has been upgraded but the situation is worsened with landslides, huge patches, rolling stones and uprooted trees on road. We are worried. This will be a big problem if it was not macadamized as of now.
Sharing their harrowing experiences, a local traveller said this is just the trailer. I don’t understand what is happening. The situation here is even worse. It takes 20 mint only to cover a distance of 7 kilometres and we put our lives at risk every day due to this. We have nothing to say. He further said that, It has been two years that I am witnessing this, one can even die on the road here because of this landslide. Imagine, huge amount has been spent on this road, adding if the road is like this, then what will be the condition of other roads in Uri area, said a traveller.
Another local said that contractor has not cleared slides on time and we on our own have cleared road for small vehicles, nine months before macdimizaton on the road has been done with an amounting of rupees more then crores but all has gone into vein, at different sports road has been damaged because of sub standard material used by contractor.
Inhabitants of the area requested Governor administration and DC Baramulla, to take strict action against concerned people for using standard material and on war footing basis road may kindly be cleared for smooth vehicular movements.
