| Online training programme on value addition in floriculture | | |

Jammu, May 29: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the administrative control of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu organised online training programme today on “Value Addition in Floriculture” which was enthusiastically attended by the women Self Help Groups members of the area. The programme was organized under the guidance of Director Extension, Dr.SK Gupta of SKUAST-J. Scientist &Head of KVK, Reasi, Dr.Banarsi Lal, warmly welcomed the participants. While addressing the participants he spoke on the scope of recycling of waste flowers and suggested the participants to utilize the waste flowers to make different types of useful products to sale in the market which can generate income and employment for them.
He said that by the value addition in floriculture new livelihood opportunities can be generated for the rural women of the hilly areas. He added that due to COVID-19 farmers face the constraints to sale their marigold flowers. They can process their flowers to make useful products which can be sold at good prices in the market. He stressed on the Self Help Groups (SHGs) formation and entrepreneurship development among them. He guided the participants on incense sticks making, organic lamps making, organic floral lamps, gods and goddesses idols, natural compost etc. from floral waste. Dr.Suja Nabi Qureshi narrated that waste flowers can be collected from temples, weddings, fields etc. to make different types of products. He added that flowers are the holy entities but are wasted after offerings which cause phenomenal ecological hazard. He guided the participants on the recycling process of flowers and discussed on the packaging, branding and marketing of floral products. He further said that holy floral waste has tremendous and unexploited potential to sustain the income of farm women. He urged farm women to make innovative products from waste flowers so that their income and employment can be enhanced. Dr.Banarsi Lal, Sr.Scientist-cum-Head proposed the formal vote of thanks. |
