Who’ll own responsibility for COVID-19 mortalities in Jammu, ask people | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 29: With over one thousand Covid deaths and counting, the winter capital of Jammu has become the only district in Jammu and Kashmir to have suffered the maximum mortality in the Union Territory, raising concerns over “negligence” on the part of the concerned. Taking no lessons from the allegedly poor arrangements for the first wave of the deadly pandemic, the authorities including those at the helm in the health care sector, were caught napping in the second wave as well. While Jammu has witnessed maximum mortality in the month of May alone, it remains the second -worst affected district with regard to the number of positive cases. Till May 27, Jammu witnessed 49395 cases, while Srinagar, on the other hand, recorded 63825 cases, highest in the UT. Such shocking mortality in the twin capitals raises brows over the role of concerned officials. The City of Temples crossed 1,000 casualty figure on May 26. Of the over 1,000 deaths in Jammu, 535 deaths took place in May alone. In the first wave, Jammu had recorded only 478 deaths as compared to 536 in Srinagar that time. The summer capital Srinagar had highest number of Covid-deaths in the first wave, witnessing 219 deaths. But Jammu all of a sudden witnessed more than double the mortality as compared to Srinagar in the second wave. With this being the plight of the twin capitals in the UT, especially Jammu, the scene of rural areas can only be imagined. The hospitals in Jammu are already under scanner for poor preparedness. The Divisional Commissioner, Jammu has already ordered probe to know if some of the mortalities took place due to oxygen supply failure in the hospitals. For Jammu, the preparedness was so poor that Covid patients were seen gasping for oxygen in the lawns of the hospitals and even in the corridors. While subsequently, the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha personally visited the affected hospitals to pull up the administration, the questions remain over fixing of responsibility on whose negligence led to such tragedy in Jammu. The Jammu people have been demanding a probe into the tragedy so that responsibility is fixed and the erring booked in the court of law. The concerned officials on the other hand have been denying any negligence on their part. |
