Jammu pays 73% more power tariff than Kashmir; gets frequent outages as return gift

JAMMU, July 2: Amid the prevailing fiasco over the power distribution and frequent outages in Jammu amid the peak summer season, startling revelations are coming to light, revealing how Jammu people are drained of their money in the name of power tariffs by the government sans any compunction.
In the last few years, as per the documents in possession of Early Times, the industries based in Jammu alone have paid more than a whooping Rs 870 crore as power tariff as compared to Kashmir Valley. As per the records, industrialists from Kashmir haven’t paid more than Rs 240 crores which are mere 27 percent of what Jammu has been paying to the power department. However, the outages continue to haunt and hound them in more ways than one.
The official documents reveal that in the financial year of 2014-15, while the government got power revenue of no less than Rs 322.76 crores from Jammu’s industries, valley paid mere Rs 98.89 crores which is Rs 223.11 crore less than Jammu region. In the financial year of 2015-16, while industries of Jammu region paid Rs 334.10 crores as power tariff to the state government, industries from Kashmir paid Rs 112.3 crores. Here again Jammu’s industries paid Rs 222 crores more than Kashmir Valley as power tariff.
During the financial year of 2016-17, Jammu’s industries have paid Rs 215.49 crores as power tariff to the government while as from Kashmir’s industrial sector, the government hasn’t realised more than Rs 30 crores of revenue so far. Here again, industrialists from Jammu region have paid Rs 185 crores more than Kashmir Valley. However, what is more ironic is that Jammu is being supplied with less power- be it for domestic or for commercial use.
The centrally sponsored schemes too seem to be going away from Jammu as per the official records. It is pertinent to mention here that under R-APDRP, a total amount of Rs 1817.26 crores has been sanctioned to J&K including Rs 987 crores for Srinagar division and Rs 830 crore for Jammu division. Therefore, Jammu has this time again got Rs 157 crore less than Srinagar in its kitty.
Early Times earlier carried out a detailed report about how under the much hyped Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS), and DDUGJY, Jammu has got a whopping Rs 82 crore less than valley, leaving thousands of dwellings craving for electricity in lurch. Under IPDS, Rs 202.27 crore would be utilized for upgrading of power infrastructure in Jammu region, while Rs 222.22 crore in Kashmir region. Under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY), Jammu region has again been sanctioned Rs 62 crore less than Kashmir Valley. While Valley will get Rs 293.30 crore, Jammu will have Rs 231.45 crore in its kitty. The scheme will enable it to initiate much awaited reforms in the rural areas.
