Babus fail to amend contentious Land Revenue Act
Mahajans, Khatris, Sikhs up in arms against discriminatory law

Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 30: Mahajans, Khatris and Sikhs are up in arms against the discriminatory Land Revenue Act which prevents them from selling or buying the agricultural land in Jammu and Kashmir.
Members of these communities have been expressing their outrage against the JK UT administration for not resolving the issue. The young people from these communities have strongly criticised the bureaucracy for not rectifying the provision even after two years of lapse ever since the J&K was converted into Union Territory. “Bharatiya Janta Party used to speak loudly before elections for the protection of rights of Jammu people but after winning elections it failed to redress our issues due to which we can’t purchase or sell agriculture land,” said Hardik Gupta.
Another member of this community, Parmesh Mahajan said in order to keep these communities away from this fundamental right, the JK UT bureaucracy has deliberately committed mischievous act but more shocking thing is that the BJP, which claims to be the representative of Jammu people, instead of rectifying this blunder has been acting as mute spectator.
The law was enacted during Maharaja’s time, but in present conditions, all communities are in the business sector in Jammu. It makes no sense that some particular communities have been barred from purchasing and selling agricultural land due to Section 133-H of J&K Land Revenue Act, he added.
It was being expected that after revocation of Article 370 and 35-A, this obsolete law will also be revoked but nothing happened.
Not only this, even more problems have been created by the Revenue Department after August 5, 2019 by denying registration of the land in the name of members pf Mahajan, Khatri and Sikh communities.
“There were restrictions on purchase of more than four kanals of agricultural land earlier but presently we cannot even purchase 4 marlas of land,” said Ramesh Gupta.
