Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 24: Notwithstanding tall claims of the authorities, the Jammu and Kashmir government is not prepared to deal with the possible third wave of the Coronavirus.
Except setting up of the dedicated COVID hospital by the DRDO, nothing has been done during the last six months in the Union Territory in general and Jammu province, in particular, to face any emergency in case of further spread of the virus.
“Number of steps have been taken to face possible third wave but these steps are taken only on the papers and in publicity”, a source in the health department said, adding, “except giving statements and making claims nothing concrete has been done”.
“Government’s seriousness to fight the virus can be gauged from the fact that even after passing of nearly one-year authorities have yet to recruit staff for operating ventilators”, a source said.
In June this year, the Jammu and Kashmir Government with much publicity had announced to start preparation of an action plan for tackling a possible third wave of COVID in Jammu and Kashmir as per suggestions of the expert committee headed by Prof Mohammad Sultan Khuroo.
As reported, the Health and Medical Education Department was asked to constitute a medical advisory team consisting of field experts in virology, epidemiology, and microbiology to provide multi-dimensional scientific recommendations for evidence-based scientific management of COVID but nothing has been done in this regard.
In June it was also announced to set up two Genome Sequencing laboratories in Jammu as well as in Srinagar to face any situation during the possible third wave.
Even after the passing of six months, these laboratories are nowhere in J&K. Recently three Omicron cases were detected in Jammu but samples of these patients were sent for Genome Sequencing in National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Delhi.
