Orange alert issued in Kashmir before snowfall

SRINAGAR, Jan 7: Tourists resorts of Gulmarg and Pahalgam received yet another spell of snowfall while light rain occurred at scattered places as the Kashmir valley prepared for “heavy to very heavy” snow fall following an “orange” alert issued by the Meteorological Department office on Friday.
A Meteorological Department office said, the intensity in the weather conditions will increase as the day progresses with the main activity of heavy rain and snow starting from tonight and continuing tomorrow in Jammu and Kashmir.
The MeT which has issued an “Orange” alert in Jammu and Kashmir for Friday and Saturday said “Currently it is raining lightly at most places of the plains of J&K with thunderstorms in Katra and some other places of Jammu region”. The forecast “expects gradual increase in intensity of rain/snow as the day progresses with main intensity being during 7th (night) and 8th. The weather will show gradual improvement from the morning of the 9th onwards”.
It has also warned “The weather may affect surface and air transportation on the 8th and can trigger avalanche/landslides at vulnerable spots”.
Further it has cautioned people living in avalanche prone areas not to venture out unless it is very urgent.
Meanwhile, Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 2.6 degree Celsius against the normal minus 1.9 degree Celsius during this period of the season and also received 3.1mm of rainfall till 0830hours, the MeT office said.
Famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir had a temperature of minus 5.5 degree Celsius which was 2.3 degree Celsius above normal against the minus 7.8 degree Celsius normally during this time of season. It has also received 2.5cms of snow and 2.8mm of rain overnight till 0830hours.
Pahalgam in south Kashmir has temperature of minus 0.4 degree Celsius and it also received 0.4cms of snow and 2.2mm of rains till 0830hours on Friday.
