Don’t ditch Covid warriors
1/7/2022 11:11:56 PM

Nearly 1600 youth, who were appointed during the peak Covid times, are seeking continuation of their services but the Jammu and Kashmir Government seems in no mood to listen to them.
These youth had served the Covid patients when their own family members had abandoned them. They were named as “Covid warriors” and appreciated for their work. Now as their utility has ended the government wants to get rid of them.
Many states across the country have acknowledged the contribution of the Covid warriors by providing them with permanent jobs. But the J & K administration is in a hurry to get rid of them.
People handling the JK affairs have been claiming that they are out to address the problem of unemployment and during the past two years the unemployment rate has declined. But the ground situation belies these claims. Things are not that hunky-dory as are being projected by the present dispensation.
If the government is really sincere it should continue the services of these Covid warriors so that they don’t feel let down. These youth are the ones who served humanity during the worst times. This shows their courage and dedication towards the human race. To lose such dedicated workers and nice human beings is a collective loss for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The government has been stating that 20,000 youth have been provided government jobs in the past two years. If 20,000 people can be accommodated why can’t these 1600 also be included in different government departments.
The Covid warriors have already proved their mettle and they don’t need any certificate from any one. These youth deserve appreciation and encouragement but the irony is that the people at the helm are not even ready to listen to them. Extending their contracts is no solution. They need a permanent job so that the uncertainty in their lives ends.
People of J&K are indebted to these Covid warriors who put their lives at stake to save the lives of others and acknowledge their contribution. The government cannot just turn its back towards them and forget their contribution. Their demand to seek continuation of their services is genuine and it needs to be considered. They are no ordinary boys and girls, they are the ones who fought the battle against the deadly virus without any weapons.
