| In Covid hit JK, tourism festivals are welcome, education can wait! | | |

Jammu, Jan 25: Even as Covid continues to “unleash havoc” across Jammu and Kashmir affecting normal life especially the educational activities, the administration continues to go ahead with its tourism promotion and other festivals.
While the schools, colleges and the coaching centers have been asked not to hold normal classes, there are no such restrictions on tourism related festivals. Even on the day of lockdown on January 23, the government held a mega Shikara rally in the Dal Lake drawing flak from the people. A few days ago, another such event was held in Budgam district where ATV rallies were held, in alleged violation of the Covid protocol as prescribed by the Union Government.
The government is also going ahead with its Tourism festivals across Jammu and Kashmir on January 25.
Amid all this, the common people are asking that “what is more important tourism or education?”
The student community whose academic activities have been affected due to the Covid restrictions have a question for the government. “If festivals and tourism promotion can be allowed why cant coaching classes do their work? Is tourism more important than education or is the career of students being taken forgranted?” the aggrieved said.
Observers said it was unfortunate that the government was busy with festivities when the student community is badly affected due to the Covid restrictions.
“If hotels can operate, festivals can be held, why cant educational activities be allowed,” agreed a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
He said the matter was discussed recently at a high level meeting but that the administration was told that “focus should be on promotion of tourism and festivals.”
“Our bosses especially those on deputation are focusing only on giving a rosy picture of the situation whereas the reality is that now the career of our children is at stake as the administration welcomes festivals but not educational activities amid deadly spike in Covid cases,” the official said. |
