Canine fear in Jammu
2/9/2022 12:43:57 AM

Swelling population of stray dogs in Jammu has made life miserable for the denizens. The fear of canines keeps people confined within their homes during morning and evening hours.
The cases of dog bites have increased as the stray dogs move in packs and attack people anywhere. The Jammu Municipal Corporation seems to have turned a blind eye towards the miseries of people as it has failed to carry out the sterilization of dogs to keep their population under control. The miseries of people faced due to these canines seem to be unending. The woes of the dog bite victims are compounded by the non-availability of enough stocks of anti-rabies vaccine.
The control methods used by the authorities seem inadequate. Sterilization is a long-time process and it appears that it’s not working. The JMC doesn’t seem that keen on resolving this grave issue.
Stray canines can be seen roaming on streets, chasing cars, pulling down bicycle riders and often attacking pedestrians and schoolchildren. If the dog population remains unchecked it can trigger fear psychosis among people.
The dog issue needs to be dealt with seriously or else dogs may outnumber the Jammuites and victimize every one.
The helmsmen should understand that Jammu cannot become a Smart City till the basic issues like sanitization, proper roads, garbage disposal mechanism and the dog menace is taken care of. The ones who are claiming that Jammu is a ‘Smart City’ should peep out from their offices and feel the ground situation. The statements only cannot turn Jammu into a Smart City. Lot more needs to be done.
The growing dog population poses a grave threat to the people and it needs to be controlled. If the authorities don’t pay any attention towards this menace people will even find it hard to come out of their homes even during day time.
It’s unfortunate that the JMC has not been able to fulfill the basic obligations that are mandatory. It cannot act as a spectator and allow the dogs to dictate terms to people. The JMC needs to formulate a comprehensive road map to deal with the canine terror so that the humans remain safe and they don’t end up in hospitals after getting bitten by the dogs.
