GMC Rajouri running on ‘Jugaad’ based wheelchairs | Patients, attendants suffer amid lack of basic equipments | | Ankit Kessar
Early times Report
Rajouri, Mar 26: Government Medical College Rajouri has been running on “Jugaad” based wheelchairs due to which patients and their attendants had to suffer a lot in moving patients from place to other in hospital. Some attendants informed the Early Times that the wheel chair, which has been kept in hospital, is broken and one of the wheels has been fixed with wire temporarily which is unable to move properly leading to inconvenience to the patients. In the absence of adequate number of wheelchairs and stretchers, patients, especially those who can’t walk, are having a harrowing time at Government Medical College Rajouri. Family members of such patients can be seen carrying them to the emergency block of the hospital. The attendants alleged that there was nobody to listen to the problem of the patients, who visit hospital in emergencies. Despite being huge infrastructure, the basic medical equipment like wheelchairs are not available adequately and which have been kept are in broken condition, which can be proved fatal for the patients as there are every chance of falling from the wheelchairs, they alleged. Patients said the hospital authorities should have adequate wheelchairs and stretchers at the entrance. Besides, such equipment is also required to reach the OPD wards in the multi-storey building. Another patient said at least one or two employees of the hospital should be deployed at the entrance of the emergency block to guide the attendants of critical patients as people mostly don’t know where to take the patient. “We got wheelchairs after effort of one hour and that too broken one which is unable to carry the patient. The entire healthcare system in the hospital has been working on “Jugadd’. It would have been better that wheelchairs should be made available on the entry of every ward” one of the attendant said. Apart from equipment, the washrooms in the hospital are in bad condition. There is no adequate parking space. Theft cases are reported from the hospital which has only 5-6 security personnel. When contacted the M.s GMC Rajouri, he denied the allegations and said that the hospital has sufficient quantity of Stretchers/Trolleys and wheel Chairs for internal transportation of patients. The wheel chairs are being used by the patients/attendants themselves and it is their responsibility to take care of such essential equipment but most of the time it has been observed that these are mishandled by the end users considering it as public property. |
