Rajouri: Power cuts during holy month of Ramadan leave consumers fuming

EARLY TIMES REPORT

RAJOURI, Apr 23: Scores of people today staged a protest in Kotranka against the administration for failing to provide regular power supply during the holy month of Ramzan. People in Rajouri district particularly Kotranka Sub-Division are grappling with a severe power crisis during the holy month of Ramzan thereby dampening the religious spirit in the region.
Locals across Kotranka complained of unscheduled power cuts throughout days especially during Sehri, a time for pre-dawn meals, and Iftaar, when Muslims are supposed to break their fast.
The prolonged power cuts, mostly during Sehri and Iftaar time, have infuriated people.
Local residents said this is the everyday story now, adding that there are frequent power cuts throughout the day and night.
“Power cuts are nothing new; they are a routine affair but have never seen such worst and frequent cuts in the holy month of Ramadan especially during Sehri and Iftaar. I hope that the Lt Governor’s administration will ensure electricity at least now for the last few days of this holy month,” said a resident.
Expressing dismay over frequent power cuts another local accused the administration of “failure” to provide uninterrupted power supply during the holy month of Ramzan, something that the authorities had claimed.
“During previous years, power supply during Sehri and Iftar used to be the priority of the Power Development Department. However, in present times it seems that the PDD and the administration sleep during the time of Sehri and Iftar,” he said.
“In the past, governments and administrations tried to facilitate the people during Ramzan, but the harrowing experiences that are unfolding in this holy month are painful and worrying,” he added.
The frequent interruption in the power supply leads people to suffer and makes it difficult to follow their obligatory religious routine. This is a clear sign of an “irresponsible” approach on behalf of the authorities concerned.
