Tale of Smart Cities
4/27/2022 12:05:51 AM

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has been making tall claims about turning Jammu and Srinagar into “Smart Cities” but it seems that these assertions are confined to papers only as nothing much is happening on the ground.
Some walls have been painted in Jammu and Srinagar, and attempts have been made to give facelift to both the cities. Nothing more than that has been done. On papers Jammu and Srinagar are Smart Cities but ground reality is different from these claims.
To create a notion both these cities are “Smart” the Power Department is installing “Smart Meters” but the electricity has disappeared as J&K is witnessing unprecedented power cuts.
Big hoardings have been installed at many places to create an impression that Srinagar and Jammu have been turned into Smart Cities but the fact is that hoardings only cannot turn any city smart. Lot more needs to be done to make these cities smart.
There are multiple problems in Jammu and Srinagar cities.
These issues range from lifting of garbage from the residential areas, poor drainage system, dilapidated roads etc.
Recently the media was abuzz with the reports that power cuts at places thronged by tourists are creating a bad impression among the visitors. Power cut during a musical fountain show at Bagh-e-Bahu in Jammu last week left the officials of the Tourism Department embarrassed. The tourists who had come to witness the show were shocked when they were told that there is no generator to provide the backup and the show has ended.
There are many tourist spots in Jammu and Kashmir which need to be developed and brought at par with the tourism spots in other places across the country.
In a nutshell a lot needs to be done to implement the plans that have been put on the paper. The wild grass along the Jhelum banks in Srinagar, garbage dumps in the localities and open drains puncture the very claims of the administration about massive development taking place across the Union Territory.
People are asking if Jammu and Srinagar are really “Smart Cities” then why these cities are without the basic facilities. Existence of Smart Cities has to go beyond papers.
